Private yoga class with Tonya Dunn is a major factor in my wellness work. Where an attempt at group yoga left me dwelling on what I can’t do, private yoga leads me to focus on what I can do. Using adaptations and props as needed for limited range of motion and flexibility, Tonya customizes each class according to my current physical and mental state. This includes stretch and strength work, restorative poses, and brief meditations. We work hard and laugh and I always leave class feeling better in body and soul. Tonya also suggests routines for home, like joint-freeing exercises to start the day. A bonus for me is how helpful some of the routines are in my daily life, like Robins Breath when I’m stressed and Dying Bug when I need to energize.

I worked with Tonya over the course of 5 weeks. I was completely new to yoga nidra but found myself drawn to it as a way of addressing underlying aspects of gut dysbiosis as well as a way of grappling with a very stressful and dark period of my life. Tonya is a gifted nidra practitioner. I experienced a journey and physical and emotional states of release I hadn't experienced before, as well as a deeper sense of where emotional trauma and physical pain resides and correlates in my body. The diads and nidra we did together transformed my relationship to my body and emotions. I've become much more sensitized to the relationship between these two things and this still remains a tool for self-understanding, compassion, and healing. This is not therapy. This is very different and operates in a very different emotional and physical way manner. Tonya is a practitioner and guide for an associative, rather than linear and logical, journey into the inner world of emotions and memory and pain. I found my work with Tonya to be deeply moving not because of what she said to me as one speaks in a conversation, but because our sessions facilitated a deep and very meaningful self-inquiry and the discovery of my own inner resource and pathway to healing. Tonya brings an exquisite gentleness and care to her work. Her demeanor is welcoming and calm, astute, and nonjudgmental. I would recommend that anyone work with her regardless of their background in healing or negotiating their physical, emotional, and psychological wounds. Her work and her approach has immense value to anyone. She also has an impressive diversity of skills, including certifications in Yoga Therapy, Ayurvedic Counseling and iRest. All of these things make Tonya a competent and compassionate professional in the yoga and yoga nidra therapy field. I look forward to continuing my work with her.
